Following the sell-out of “Traitors, Cads and Cowards” in 2016, Green Curtain Theatre are delighted to be staging plays from their second London Irish Play Festival at the Bread and Roses again.
A Tragic Carmody by Brian Whelan In his first play celebrated contemporary artist Brian Whelan tells the true story of his collaboration with the late artist Danny Carmody as they attempt to stage an exhibition of London Irish art . Danny, a builder, was a self-taught artist who believed in painting big. His works were the size of a small carpet and reflected the ‘rawness and soreness' of his life. Brian never doubted the talent of his friend, but how will the artistic world and his own London Irish community respond to his work? Mosley Must Fall by Martin McNamara October 1936. Tensions are rising in the streets of East London as Oswald Mosley and his fascists prepare to march through the Jewish and Irish ghettos. And tensions are running high in the McEnroe household. Liam McEnroe, a damaged veteran of the Dublin Easter Rising in 1916, is determined his two sons will stay out of the fray, but the conflict and the conflicting forces of British fascism, Left wing radicals, devout Irish Catholicism and cross religious love are threatening to rip his family apart. What’s the Story? by Maureen Alcorn 1940. Two young Irish girls join the thousands leaving their native land to take up nursing posts in war torn London. How will they fair amongst the bombs and rationing as they care for TB patients in the Lewisham hospital to which they are sent? This‘ imagined play’ is a tribute to the real life Staff Nurse Mary Fleming and Senior Assistant Nurse Aileen Turner, two Irish women awarded the George Medal in 1941. Mary’s citation when she received the honour read: “for her quickness, coolness and courage in rescuing seventeen patients from almost certain death after the Grove Park Hospital was shattered by a German bomb” “Across the Water”- a celebration for St Patrick’s Day Join the actors and musicians for a truly London Irish celebration. In this special “Shows from the Songs” we have six short plays based on well-known Irish songs. Come along prepared to sing along with old favourites such as Cockles and Mussels, Galway Girl, Delaney’s Donkey as well as more contemporary songs.
