The Bread & Roses
Emerging Companies Award
The Bread & Roses Emerging Companies Award offers new theatre companies development possibilities through a changing range of offers and collaborations, which so far have included paid R&D periods, rehearsal space, development and marketing support, as well as performance space with 90% box-office-takings for up to one-week-runs. Launched in 2015, the award scheme was run for the second time in 2017, in collaboration with Hiive for that edition, and is opening for its third round in 2021, this time supported by funding from the Culture Recovery Fund.

What’s on offer:
Who can apply:
In order to counter existing societal imbalances, this opportunity is specifically aimed at companies that feature at least 50% BAME/BIPoC creatives in the project applied with, including in decision-making positions. * BAME stands for Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic. BIPoC stands for Black, Indigenous & People of Colour. Both terms are used to describe persons who, by attributions and perceptions projected onto them by the white population as being ‘non-white’, experience racism and discrimination as well as structural and systemic limitations of participation and equal opportunities. Whilst we do not think the terms are adequate enough to address our societies’ real diversity, we have opted for the use of both of these most common terms on this occasion, to convey the intended outreach of this opportunity as effectively as possible.
We generally will consider emerging companies to be those in their first two years of working, made up of a majority of creatives in their first five years of working in (or returning) to the theatre industry / fringe theatre scene, with educational time not included. Newly founded companies may also apply.
- rehearsal space for one week of research & development at The Bread & Roses (or an alternative venue)
- weekly fee for 2 to 6 creatives involved
- feedback and guidance from the theatre’s team
- forging a connection to The Bread & Roses Theatre, with the possibility of a future production run (on a box-office split basis) and accessing its professional industry and marketing network
Who can apply:
- Emerging BAME/BIPoC-led theatre companies with a specific project they are currently working on or would like to start working on

The Bread & Roses Theatre recognises that we live in a society where discrimination still operates to the disadvantage of many groups and people in society and believes that all persons should have equal rights to recognition of their human dignity, and to have equal opportunities to be educated, to work, receive services and to participate in society. We celebrate the diversity in our team and visiting companies but strive for more and are committed to creating an inclusive environment. In terms of the R&D space and support, we will aim to meet any accessibility requirements, however, we regret very much that our theatre venue itself has accessibility constraints that can currently not be overcome. If you are an applicant that the theatre may cause access issues for and have further queries, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected].
This opportunity will only go ahead if in the scheduled time frame meetings and gatherings of this nature will be possible whilst adhering to the current Covid-19 measures. Should the measures at the time make it impossible for the R&D to go ahead as outlined above, a postponement or adaptation will be envisaged, but cannot be guaranteed.
