The Bread & Roses Emerging Artist 2024

Picture

Dedicated to nourishing on and off-stage talent, the Bread and Roses Theatre runs a yearly program which offers guidance and opportunities for an emerging theatre-maker.

A blend of our former Emerging Director and Producer programs, the Emerging Artist program is new for 2024!  As we head into our 10th year we are offering an artist, of any (or many!) theatre-making disciplines a one year attachment to the theatre.

We’re seeking an Emerging Artist in the very early stages of their career who is interested in further developing their skills, gaining insights into making productions and running a theatre, as well as making new connections and working in a diverse and forward-thinking environment.

We would love to hear from Emerging Artists of all ages and backgrounds, including recent graduates, people who may be interested in a career change or artists practicing different disciplines who are interested in exploring their practice as an all round theatre-maker . We are especially keen to hear from artists from the global majority and/or working class and LGBTQ+ creatives.

During the year our Emerging Artist would have the opportunity to learn about and gain practical experience in theatre-making, directing, producing, programming, venue management and performing.

There will also be possibility throughout the year to work on your own project with support from The Bread & Roses Theatre including; in-kind rehearsal space, work and meeting space, practical project specific mentoring and your own programmed performance with a favourable split at the end of 2024 / in to 2025.

The selected candidate will become an Associate Emerging Artist at The Bread & Roses Theatre for the year 2024, which will include the following opportunities (dependant on disciplines, availability and interests):
  • Opportunity to assist on our full scale in-house production (late 2024) - LLW paid minimum
  • Possibility to attend our monthly Playwrights Circle be part of our regular in-house new writing night The Platform (usually twice a year)
  • Mentoring and shadowing opportunities to learn about the running of a fringe theatre and festival
  • Opportunity to assist on our annual fringe festival - (Autumn 2024) - LLW paid minimum
  • Space to learn about any other aspects of fringe theatre that would be of interest, including developing new contacts and experimenting with new disciplines
  • Meeting and work space and access to The Bread & Roses Theatre’s networks
  • Marketing, rehearsal & venue support for their own small production, realised in collaboration with The Bread & Roses Theatre.

There are no full time commitments, the opportunities are around the Emerging Artists availability and are scheduled / adapted to their interests and needs. All mentoring and shadowing opportunities are voluntary for both The Bread & Roses Theatre team and the Emerging Artist. Projects assisted on are paid London Living Wage as a minimum.

To apply please send us a CV and cover letter (no more than 800 words) or a video (no more than 3 minutes) explaining a little about yourself, your practice, an example of a project you would like space to actualise and what you would gain from the program.

Email: [email protected] with 'Emerging Artist 2024’ in the subject line.

Applications close 5th January 2024 at midnight. Interviews will be held mid January 2024.
